There are generally 2 different makes of telescopic brushes. Stromag and ZF.
They can be interchanged and there are some exceptions and variations.

This tells us how long the brush needs to be in order to reach the slip ring (commutator) on the clutch. You measure from the bottom side of hex nut, to the tip of the brush, pushed as far as it goes in.

There are only 3 thread diameters that are measured just below the hex nut:
14mm, 16mm, or 18mm

Most telescopic brushes run in oil or have an oil feed right near the point of contact with clutch. Very few have graphite tips and are for clutches that do not run in oil.

Some telescopic brushes require extension tubes to reach the clutch. They are measured exactly the same way as those without extension; bottom of hex nut to tip of brush pushed all the way in.
